Out of the Woods April Book Club - This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein

This April, as we gear up for Earth Day, I decided we should pull out one of the heavy hitters for book club. I have had this book on my TBR list since grad school when a professor mentioned it to me to read in tandem with Project Drawdown. It has been sitting there untouched ever since and I thought what better way to celebrate the planet, gain some knowledge and open up a tough conversation when it comes to how we produce, consume and dispose in this era of climate crisis.

What intrigues me about this book - and like I mentioned I have not read it yet - is the concept that comes up in the summary about how our relationship to nature has changed, and from there it was all downhill. I often think if we had not lost touch with the land, the water, the planet in the way that we have, if we did not view it as other, if our predicament would be vastly different, maybe even solved? I am eager to explore these pages, be asked hard questions I, and you, may not be able to answer, and open myself up to learning about a different path.

It is always a fine line, talking about sustainability, the climate crisis and the ensuing topics when working for companies that manufacture and produce goods. What I love so dearly about Out of the Woods® is that we explore innovation, cherish groundbreakers, and celebrate alternative paths that do better for both people and planet. My favorite phrase, Because You Deserve a Better Bag, is not something I came up with just for you, though I do hope you know you always deserve better, but because the planet deserves a better bag, a better route to production, a better way to create without taking. I think this April, Naomi Klein this will give us great insight into the feat in which we will have to take on to return to the planet and its inhabitants to a healthy state while being conscious of reality and our ability as a whole to do better.
